Yes, you can start a home business for $0. Affiliate programs, freelancing sites and some selling platforms are free to join. But free to join doesn't always mean free to run. Each option below has a catch, and I've put it right next to the good part so you can choose with your eyes open.

When my family was struggling to get by, spending money to make money felt scary. Maybe you feel the same. That's why I keep a full list of businesses that are free to start, with 44 of them at $0 a month. These are 10 I'd look at first.

How I picked these 10

Every one costs $0 a month to join. I mixed different kinds of work, so there's something for writers, sellers, people with a skill, and people who'd rather recommend products. And I included the real downside of each one, because a list with no downsides is a sales pitch.

The 10 at a glance

Recommend products: Amazon Associates, eBay Partner Network, Digistore24.
Sell what you make: Amazon KDP, Gumroad.
Sell what you already have: Mercari.
Get paid for a skill: Fiverr, Rev, UserTesting.
A free tool to get started: Systeme.io.

Free home businesses where you recommend products

1. Amazon Associates

Amazon's free affiliate program. You share links to products on Amazon and earn a commission when people buy. Good for: anyone who already talks about products they love. The catch: you need a place where people see your links, like a blog, YouTube channel or social page, and that takes time to build. Read my Amazon Associates review.

2. eBay Partner Network

eBay's free affiliate program. You earn a percentage of the sale when people buy on eBay through your links. Good for: people who love deals, collectibles or used gear. The catch: same as Amazon. You need an audience before the links pay.

3. Digistore24

An affiliate marketplace for digital products. Affiliates join free and promote courses, software and other offers for a commission. Good for: people who want to recommend online courses and tools. The catch: product quality varies a lot. Check every product before you put your name on it.

4. Amazon KDP

Amazon's free self-publishing service for ebooks and paperbacks, paying royalties on each sale. Good for: writers, and anyone with a story or know-how to share. The catch: writing a good book takes real time, and a book nobody hears about doesn't sell. Read my Amazon KDP review.

5. Gumroad

A simple way to sell digital products like ebooks, templates and courses, with no monthly fee. Good for: people who've made something useful, like a planner or a guide. The catch: Gumroad takes a fee when you sell, and you have to bring your own buyers.

6. Mercari

An online marketplace where you can sell almost anything, from clothes and electronics to toys, with a flat 10% selling fee. Good for: clearing out closets and the garage for quick cash. The catch: photos, listings and shipping take time, and you'll run out of things to sell unless you start finding more. Compare it in Poshmark vs Mercari.

Free businesses where you get paid for a skill

7. Fiverr

A freelance marketplace where you offer services like design, writing, video and AI work as fixed-price gigs. Good for: anyone with a skill people pay for. The catch: there's a lot of competition, and Fiverr keeps a share of each order. See Fiverr vs Upwork.

8. Rev

Freelancers transcribe, caption and translate audio and video from home, and get paid weekly. Good for: fast, careful typists. The catch: your pay depends on your speed and accuracy, and the amount of work can change. Read my Rev review.

9. UserTesting

Everyday people get paid to try websites and apps and share honest feedback. Good for: anyone with a computer and an opinion. The catch: tests come and go, so think of it as extra grocery money, not a business.

A free tool to help you get started

10. Systeme.io

A funnel, email, course and website platform with a free plan for up to 2,000 contacts. Good for: anyone starting affiliate marketing who needs pages and email without a monthly bill. The catch: it's a tool, not a business. It only helps once you have something to share. Read my Systeme.io review.

How to choose the right free home business

Start with what you already have. A skill, a closet full of stuff, a story, or products you already love.

Be honest about your hours. Freelancing and selling can pay sooner. Affiliate marketing and books usually take longer.

Count the catch. Fees, competition and time are the real price of a "free" business.

If you can spend a little, my list of businesses under $30 a month opens up more choices.
